This traditional coastal home remodel started when a long time acquaintance popped into the shop to buy a sofa and chairs. Fast forward a handful of months and we are meeting to talk about her home on the bayou! The client wanted to breathe new life into her home and it’s beautiful bones. She wanted to start by remodeling a fish-camp style kitchen that was dysfunctional, dark and overall lacking in style points in a big way.

The original sofa and chairs purchased from our shop set the stage for all the additional design in this room–layering beautiful and unexpected colors and working with some of the client’s existing antiques. Just want a traditional coastal home remodel needs–eclectic style!
Optimizing the Kitchen
We always begin at the beginning, with a solid plan. In this case, that plan involved optimizing the island and adjusting how the kitchen was accessed from the side entry, sunroom, and dining room. Balancing these egress changes with wider openings and even header heights shifted a lot in the feel of the space instantly. It also managed a better flow functionally and offered up the opportunity for a more substantial island.
Next, came the materials and defining the feel for the coastal kitchen.
This was truly a nice kick-start to other changes that became a domino effect throughout the rest of the house. Watching the client become excited to look at new colors, wall covering materials and slightly more stylized selections, was a treat! The backsplash tile was one particular element, as well as a big investment, that set a serious tone for the overall design. The custom hood – oh that hood! – hit a perfect pitch.Thus, feeling loved but not in a patinated old french country sort of way. Cladding the walls of the kitchen itself in a natural fiber wall covering warmed the kitchen. Therefore, adding a cozy textural element that almost hints towards purple without being too femme or frilly.
Our local cabinet maker and metalsmith may have wanted to kill us when it came to the hutch door! The execution of these elements created a collected feel that was just right.
(Not to mention the functionality of those pieces – the amount of closed storage and easy access keeps the countertop surfaces from becoming a catch all! Supreme!)
Capturing a Breakfast Area in just the right way!
Leading to the end of the kitchen space, we had to capture the breakfast area in just the right way. Featuring the natural light and also offering up a really pretty, comfortable but posh dining space! Thus, creating a dining space for day to day meals and little gatherings with friends for tea and cocktails. Pulling the faint hint of purple-grey from the main cabinetry in the kitchen, the soft plum seats on the breakfast chairs really stole our hearts.
Setting those off with the more mottled, watercolor feel of the amethyst tones in the fabric on the chair backs just hit the nail on the head. Keeping this space slightly more refined worked to balance the more organic feel of the wall covering and metal details in the kitchen. It’s a dreamy little nook of the house now and the perfect solution for casual dining, reading, paying bills – you name it!
